Think about your shoulders for a moment. I don’t care if you’re performing bench press, pushups, or just pushing open a door. Most people perform these actions with slight internal rotation of the shoulders causing impingement and risk of injury to the rotator cuff muscles. People could just as easily perform these actions with the shoulders slightly externally rotated, and you can remember this by thinking thumbs up to shoulder health. This is going to open up the shoulder joints, decrease injury to the rotator cuff muscles, and isolate the pecs.
Now a better question is why are people even performing bench press and pushups? Well they’re typically trying to broaden their chest, but they’re doing so with an exercise that actually draws the shoulders forward and gives the appearance of a smaller chest. And what they should do is the exact opposite—strengthen the upper back which is going to pull the shoulders back, widen the chest, and add a protective benefit to the shoulder joints. And once again, there’s a right way and a wrong way to strengthen the upper back which I’m going to go over in this program.

If you’re someone who squats, you may have heard it’s important to go low and add more weight if you’re going to gain strength. But this causes you to sacrifice the health of your knee joints. It’s a better idea to go slow, not low, and to use less weight, but concentrate. This isolates your quads so that you stress the muscle metabolically to gain strength, instead of stressing your knees.
